Chargers Ambushed by Commandos, Streak Ends at 38

It seemed like it for two and a half years, but you can't win 'em all.

After running a gauntlet of big, fast, and deep 4A opponents, the 2nd-ranked Chargers left everything on Pop Murray Memorial Field during Friday's State Quarterfinal match with 7th-ranked Cascia Hall. It was a tough pill to swallow, moving many of the competitors to tears as "The Streak" and their 2016 State Championship hopes were abruptly halted by the Commandos, 32-7.

The Chargers didn't have an answer for Grant Ward, who carried the ball 34 times for 151 yards, moving the chains and – more importantly – the clock, keeping the ball away from a potent Heritage Hall offense (averaging 39.7 points per contest heading into the Quarterfinal).

The Chargers didn't have the ball for much of the game, and the ball didn't seem to bounce their way. Missing starting quarterback Blake Adams (out with a broken rib suffered in the regular season finale at Elk City), Coach Bogert called on a trio of players to lead the offense. The Chargers finished with just 143 yards of total offense, threw 5 interceptions, and gave up two safeties.

Santana Randle connected with Chandler Shapard on a 34 yard touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter to make the game 14-7, but the Commandos pulled away from that point.

Despite the loss, the 11-1 season was a huge success for Coach Bogert, now 26-1 as the Chargers' Head Coach. It opened with an impressive win over 3A title contender John Marshall and unstoppable feature back Devonte Lee. The Chargers played a road-heavy schedule that included big wins over 2A powerhouse Davis, 4A quarterfinalist Weatherford, and a talented 4A Cache squad that was expected to challenge The Hall for District 4A-1. The Chargers pushed the program's win streak to new heights, 38 consecutive victories, which was the 10th longest active streak in the nation at the time it ended.

Two things are certain – this year's Seniors made their mark and left a strong legacy, and, this unfortunate loss will fuel a competitive fire among the returning players as they begin preparation for a run at the 2017 Class 4A State Championship.

Onward, Chargers!
