Lady Chargers Ground Rockets, 4 in Double Figures
In their first 4A match since moving up a classification over the off-season, the Lady Chargers proved they can be a force to be reckoned with, utilizing a great team effort to knock off Mount Saint Mary 62-41.
Makenzi English provided the fireworks early with a quick bucket on the opening possession, but the team struggled afterward to survive the first half with a 29-25 lead. "We were sluggish and missed a lot of easy shots. Abbie and Makenzi both had two fouls before halftime," reflected Head Coach
Leslie Warner.
English came out of the locker room dialing in from long distance for 3 more of her 15 points to open scoring in the second half. The Lady Chargers mixed it up defensively, running man-to-man, trapping at half court, and even employing a full court press. When the third quarter buzzer sounded, Heritage Hall had stretched the lead to 45-36.
Fouls caught up with
Abbie Winchester early in the fourth quarter, but Coach Warner's squad pulled together as a team and went on a 17-5 run to close out the Lady Rockets. During that stretch, the Lady Chargers attacked the rim relentlessly while shooting 11 of 16 at the free throw stripe.
"I'm really proud of our team for coming together and finishing after Abbie fouled out.
Kennedy Gillette played hard for 32Â minutes, not coming out the entire game. I'm not sure what the numbers were yet, but I know we outrebounded them. We've still got to limit our turnovers more," said Warner.
The Lady Chargers will have a rematch with the Lady Rockets on January 31st in a home contest that will also be broadcast live on ChargerVision.
