Douglass Hands Chargers First Loss of Season
Trading places.
Last Spring, Heritage Hall made another deep run in the 3A postseason tournament envisioning a repeat as Champs, but ultimately lost in the Final to Verdigris. Meanwhile, the Douglass Trojans steam-rolled their competition en route to a 6th Class 4A title in 7 years.
Due to the OSSAA's private school "Success Rule," the Hall moved up to Class 4A during the offseason. Despite their tournament triumphs, Douglass dropped down to Class 3A due to a smaller student body. The McClendon Athletic Center was abuzz in anticipation of an epic showdown of mid-sized powerhouse programs, regardless of the switch in classification.
In a sloppy first quarter by both teams, Heritage Hall built an 8-2 lead before Douglass knocked down a late three to cut the lead to 3 after one.
The Chargers scored the first bucket of the 2nd quarter, but Douglass' star wingman Coryon Mason answered with a three. And then things turned South for Heritage Hall. It seemed like there was a lid on the basket as shots weren't dropping. The Hall finished the night shooting 37% from the field, and just 17% on 4 of 23 from long distance.
The Trojan's deep bench and press defense kept the Chargers out of sync and multiple Heritage starters battled foul trouble from the second quarter on. The final foul count in the game was 24 against HH and 14 whistles blown on Douglass.
Sayvon Milton was a bright spot for the Chargers as he lit up the MAC for 32 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists.
Les Thomas scored 10 points to go with 6 rebounds, and
Jon Matthews was able to chip in 9 points and 6 boards before fouling out.
