The Lady Chargers might have hit the snooze bar a few too many times before rolling out of bed.
With an early start (10:30am) to tip off the Buckle of the Wheatbelt tournament in Kingfisher, Coach
Leslie Warner wanted her team to be wide awake and ready to ball. At the onset, it looked like that would happen as her girls jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, but then both teams tossed and turned for a while as the game turned sloppy. After one quarter, the Lady Chargers held a 17-9 lead.
In the second quarter, things went from sloppy to sluggish for both teams. After Bethany scored on their first two possessions, the Lady Charger defense went to work, blanking the Broncos for the rest of the quarter. Meanwhile, the Charger offense sputtered as shots weren't falling.
Hannah Stanley scored at the 2:43 mark to stop the drought, and again with about 30 seconds remaining to give The Hall a 21-13 halftime advantage.
The Bronchos used a 7-0 run to open the 3rd quarter and pull to within 1 point, but then didn't score again until the 1 minute mark. The Lady Chargers continued to struggle shooting the ball, including at the charity stripe, until Lailah Rahmanzadeh found
Kennedy Gillette for a 12-footer along the left baseline. When the third quarter concluded, Heritage Hall still held a 29-22 lead.
Bethany started the 4th quarter in attack mode, scoring the final period's first basket to cut the lead to five.
It wasn't until the 5:10 mark the Lady Chargers offense finally woke up.
Hannah Stanley drove baseline and drew a foul before knocking down the "and-one" free throw. The Hall started moving the ball better, as
Hannah Stanley found a wide open
Makenzi English for a baseline trey. Moments later,
Abbie Winchester connected cross-court with Gillette for three. Finding herself open again on the next possession, Gillette knocked down another three on an assist by English and the Lady Chargers held a much more comfortable 45-30 lead with a couple of minutes to play.
When the final buzzer sounded, Heritage Hall put the Broncos to bed, 49-32, to advance to the semifinal matchup at 7pm Friday night.
Hannah Stanley and
Kennedy Gillette paced the Lady Chargers with 16 points each, and Gillette snared 12 rebounds and 3 steals in the contest. Winchester finished with 9 points and 11 rebounds. Heritage Hall also got a solid contribution from
Tayler Stanley who tallied 7 points and 4 rebounds.
