Heritage Hall made long distance connection after long distance connection to phone in an impressive 71-55 win over 6A #5 Putnam City North and take home Third Place in a very competitive tournament.
In the first quarter, the Chargers scored early on an alley-oop lay-in that
Sayvon Milton finished and then ripped the nets from outside for 5 straight three pointers. However, PC North was relentless in their attack on the basket and went into the second quarter tied up with Heritage Hall at 17 apiece.
In the second quarter,
Jon Matthews showed why he was once compared to a "hummingbird in a particle accelerator" on social media, pushing the pace to score 9 points. Late in the quarter, Matthews put a double move on a North defender to electrify the crowd. The Chargers stayed hot from behind the arc as
Les Thomas knocked down his third and fourth three pointer and
William McDonald also connected from deep to give the Hall a 35-32 halftime lead.
Matthews, Thomas, and
Michael McLaughlin dropped more three-point bombs to help the Chargers jump out to an 11 point third quarter lead, but PC North trimmed that lead to 50-43 by the end of the period.
With the defense guarding him tightly to avoid another barrage of three-pointers, Thomas began an assault on the rim, scoring 10 of his game-high 31 points in the final period. 15 of his points in the game came off of three point connections. Thomas was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 23.0 points in the three games.
Matthews finished the game with 19 points and Milton notched 12.
William McDonald with 5, McLaughlin's 3, and two
Jack Griffin free throws rounded out the scoring for the Chargers.
Heritage Hall has been impressive of late, win or lose, with a landslide victory over sizable Sunrise Academy (Kansas) and a near-upset against 6A #1 Tulsa Union. It's not a stat officially kept, but there is almost no doubt the Chargers have the toughest strength of schedule of any team in the state right now. The Hall has faced 6A#1 and #5, 5A #2, 4A #2 and #13, 3A #2, and A #1 – and come out of it all with a winning record.
It doesn't get any easier. Up next is a rematch with 3A #2 Douglass on the road. It's time to Charger up.
