Chargers blow out Bobcats to move to 6-1

With only a few Thursday night games across the metro, high school football fans were dialed in to Heritage Hall's showdown with Bridge Creek.

Fans were curious to see if the Hall could continue its winning ways. Standing in the Chargers path were the Bridge Creek Bobcats, a team who hadn't tasted victory since Week 1. Though the Bobcats record indicated it would be an easy task for the Chargers, this game was still extremely important for the Chargers – it was a last chance to set good habits to carry into a highly anticipated rivalry showdown with Kingfisher the following week.

As the game begun, all eyes were on new starting QB Jackson Jobe. An outstanding baseball player with a strong arm, Jobe took over the reins at quarterback for Heritage Hall and quickly made a statement. On the opening drive, the sophomore caught the attention of the fans at Pop Murray Field, as he showed off his agility and scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. Then Jobe took to the air, finding Billy Ross, Jr., for a 13-yard strike. The dynamic duo of Ross and Conner Carey pounded the Bobcats again and again, as they each scored from 15 and 6 yards out on the ground. After one, it was Heritage Hall with a dominating 30-0 lead.

The second quarter was nothing different, as the Chargers continued to pour it on. Carey was able to score two more times, running it in from 10 yards, and then popping off a 52-yard beauty to stretch The Hall's lead. Equally as impressive as the offense was the Charger defense, keeping Bridge Creek from crossing the line of scrimmage for most of the first half. When time expired in the second quarter, the game was all but over at 44-0.

With both teams agreeing to a running clock in the second half, time flew by, and as a result there was not much action. Both defenses stood strong in the third quarter, and the score remained the same. Fans got a glimpse at the future, however, as the younger generation of Chargers played the majority of the second half. Freshman backup quarterback William Paque punctuated the victory with a 9-yard keeper into the end zone. The clock expired Thursday night with a resounding 50-0 Heritage Hall win.

Jobe did not throw the ball much, but he finished 3 of 4 passing for 89 yards and one touchdown. The ground game was in full effect Thursday night, as Carey had 140 yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries. Jobe also had 4 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown. Ross scored on his only rushing attempt, and snagged two passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. Philip Smitherman provided some fireworks again, dazzling the crowd and firing up the sidelines with a phenomenal diving grab worthy of Sportcenter's Top 10. Colby Lewis led the team in tackles with 9, while Connor Keith and Hardy Bowers tallied 8 each in basically one half of play. Preston Nelson added 6 tackles.

Next week, the Chargers visit district foe Kingfisher in perhaps the most anticipated game all season. The Chargers and Yellow Jackets will renew a rivalry that historically determines the District Champ. Tune in online as ChargerVision will be live from Kingfisher with total coverage of the game. Onward, Chargers!
