Chargers blow by Red Tornadoes in Week 2 clash

Week two brought on another highly anticipated game and one of their tougher opponents on the Chargers' schedule. The Hall faced a familiar foes in the 4A #4 Clinton Red Tornadoes. After two consecutive years playing at the Tornado Bowl in Clinton, where the Chargers pulled off two comeback wins, Heritage Hall hosted the Tornadoes.

Leading up to the showdown, Clinton was coming off of an impressive 49-14 win over Woodward. The Chargers knew this would be a more physical contest than their week one game with Millwood. Building on momentum from the Millwood win, Coach Bogert made sure his squad was well prepared.

The game started off strong as Heritage Hall went on a 16 play, 6 minute drive. Robert Mbroh punched it in from 3 yards out to get the Chargers on the board early in the first quarter. The Tornadoes were unable to respond during the rest of the first quarter and the Charger defense preserved a 7-0 lead.

However, the Tornados scored their first touchdown on a double pass early in the second quarter to put them on the board and tie it at 7.

The Chargers answered right back when Jackson Jobe completed a 35 yard pass to Philip Smitherman to put The Hall back in Red Tornado territory.  A few plays later, a Jayden Williams run put the ball inside the 5-yard line. Jobe quickly responded with a fancy run around the right side for a 4-yard touchdown to put the Chargers up 13-7.

Heritage Hall scored again when Jobe found junior Colby Lewis on a short touchdown pass to push the halftime lead to 20-7.

After halftime the Chargers knew they couldn't let up. After all, they knew what if felt like being down having to stage a dramatic comeback.

The third quarter started off with some fireworks,  as Colby Lewis snagged a tipped pass out of the air and sprinted 76 yards to the end zone for another Charger score to silence the Tornado sidelines.

Sophomore Luke Butler went on to kick for the Hall and converted the extra point to put the Chargers up 27-7. In his first year with primary kicking duties, Butler has responded well and seems to be improving weekly.

Lewis scored his 3rd touchdown of the night to start the 4th quarter off right. Lewis got behind the Clinton defense, looked back over his shoulder, and hauled in an impressive 46 yard touchdown pass from Jobe.

The Chargers led 34-7 and the defense continued to dominate until the final buzzer. Once again, with a huge Charger lead late in the 4th, Coach Bogert found valuable playing time for a lot of younger players.

The Chargers victory made it 6 straight against the Red Tornadoes. The Chargers took control from the opening kickoff and the win over a ranked 4A opponent boosted their confidence as the season moves along.

Jobe threw for 275 yards, completing 13 of 17 passes. Williams led the Chargers in rushing with 44 yards on 6 carries. The Hall had two 100-yard receivers as Lewis recorded 126 yards to go with 3 touchdowns, while Smitherman racked up 100 yards on the dot.

On the defensive side, leading tacklers were Hardy Bowers (10), Smitherman (10), and Connor Keith (9). Smitherman and Davis Duncan also recorded interceptions on the night.

Heritage Hall hits the road next week to face a 2A traditional power in the Davis Wolves, who are off to a slower than usual 0-2 start. Last year the Chargers trampled the Wolves 36-7 and will be looking for repeat success that results in a non-district sweep.
