Chargers swat Yellowjackets to clinch District

With the regular season drawing to a close, the Chargers faced the Kingfisher Yellowjackets in a battle for the District Championship. Over the years, The Hall has formed a competitive "rivalry'' with Kingfisher – both schools have built great football, basketball, and baseball programs that usually end up in the same Class or even District.

Coach Bogert and his staff had their team well prepared for a high level challenge from Kingfisher. The Chargers knew the key to success was going to be stopping the Yellowjackets' high volume air raid from stinging them too often.

The Hall dominated from the first whistle and kept building momentum, rattling the Jackets' defense early and often. Will Pauque dropped a perfect pass in the bucket to Orie Walker, who got behind the Kingfisher safety to get the Chargers to the 6 yard line. A couple of plays later, River Faulkner scored the game's first touchdown, trucking Cade Stephenson and stepping into the end zone on a 3 yard run to put the Chargers up 7-0.

The Yellowjackets' high powered offense struggled to lift off and keep pace. The Charger defense played with passion, but kept a cool and collected mindset, forcing the home team to punt on their first possession.

After Kingfisher forced The Hall into a punt, Landon Lahodny snared his second interception of the season, picking off Jax Sternberger and returning the pick to the Jackets' 36 yard line.

The referees dominated the latter half of the first quarter as the squads traded penalties while Heritage Hall moved the ball closer to the goalline.

The second quarter was an eventful one for the Chargers. On the first play of the new frame, Robert Mbroh took a direct snap and scored from the wildcat formation. Kingfisher jumped offside on the extra point snap, but then stopped The Hall on the ensuing 2-point conversion. Heritage held a 13-0 lead early in the quarter.

The Charger defense continued to dominate and Melvin Swindle stepped in front of a screen pass before rumbling down the sideline to the 10 yard line. The interception was Swindle's career third, which is impressive from the defensive tackle position. Two plays later, Mbroh punched in his second score of the night on a short run and the 'good guys' led 20-0.

The Yellowjackets continued to struggle offensively, and the Gold Rush defense stripped the ball out of Sternberger's hands on a scramble and Faulkner covered the fumble at the 35 yard line to give the Chargers great field position again.

Luke Butler knocked in his second field goal of the season, this one from 23 yards out, to stretch the lead to 23-0.

The Jackets finally got on the board when the Chargers bit on a play action, and Sternberger found Cade Stephenson uncovered, in full stride on a wheel route for a 77 yard touchdown. The touchdown let The Hall know that the Jackets wouldn't fold easily.

The Hall responded quickly, reasserting their dominance. After a 15-yard facemask penalty, Faulkner responded with a 40 yard dash off tackle behind crushing blocks by A.J. Sirls, Jr., Omari Smith, and Mbroh to find the end zone and a 30-7 lead for The Hall.

Kingfisher running back Cade Stephenson tried to make some magic happen down the sideline, but lost control of the ball after a 30-yard run and Lahodny pounced on the ball.

A couple of plays later, Walker hauled in a 27 yard touchdown pass from Paque on an exciting stop-and-go route. The sophomore receiver skied to grab the ball and, as he contacted the ground in the end zone, the ball seemed to have possibly popped out. On ChargerVision replay it was clear that Walker retained possession as he stretched the ball across the goal line for the score.

Going into halftime, the Hall led by 30 points over a huge District rival, imposing their will on the Yellowjackets. The Chargers knew that Kingfisher would come out fighting for redemption and a chance at a miracle comeback.

The second half for the Chargers started like the first half did, with the defense holding the Jackets' to a three and out.

With great field position in Kingfisher territory, the Charger offense milked the clock on a short drive that included a 4th down conversion, but ultimately couldn't get in the end zone. Butler salvaged some points as he drilled a 24 yard field goal to make it 40-7.

The Jackets struck quickly and scored their second touchdown of the night on a pass over the middle from Sternberger to senior Caleb Dick, who juked and outran the Charger secondary. At the close of the third, The Hall still held an impressive 40-14 lead.

The fourth quarter started with great effort on both sides of the ball for Heritage. After Sirls intercepted Sternberger and returned the ball deep into Jackets' territory, the Chargers continued to fight and push more points. Senior running back Payton Earnest rushed three straight times before finally scoring on a hard 1 yard run to push the score to 47-14.

The Yellowjackets ended the night with a final touchdown on a 3 yard run to make the final score 47-21.

The Heritage Hall offense was led by Will Paque, who completed 10 of 22 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown. River Faulker led the ground attack with 10 carries for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns. Paque's top targets were Orie Walker (4 receptions for 114 yards) and Gavin Freeman (3 receptions for 40 yards).

Turning in one of the better defensive performances was Nick Keith. The junior led the team with 9 tackles, including one sack. Jayden Williams, Mason Georgia, and Gavin Wilson also registered sacks. Four Chargers made interceptions – Landon Lahodny, Melvin Swindle, Davis Duncan, and A.J. Sirls, Jr. The defense came up with 6 takeaways and held the Yellowjackets to just 27 yards rushing.

Luke Butler was phenomenal in the special teams. The junior was 5 of 5 on extra points, knocked in both field goal attempts, and tallied 8 touchbacks on 10 kickoffs.

The Chargers played a tremendous game in every aspect. They played hard, fast paced and together. With momentum building into the final week of the regular season, The Hall will undoubtedly work hard to continue improving on all the little details.

The win over Kingfisher locked up a seventh straight District Championship and the program's 21st all-time. Since taking the helm in 2015, head coach Brett Bogert '05 has led the Chargers to a District title in every season. The team looked extremely united on the field and their motto for the year "humble and hungry" really showed in their high level of effort and execution. The Chargers came out with a very impressive win to extend their win streak to five.

In the final week of the regular season, the Chargers will host Mount Saint Mary in a Senior Night showdown. The Rockets started off the season full throttle, winning their first four. However since then, COVID situations have canceled two games and they have been blown out by McLoud and Anadarko. Another win helps the Chargers launch into the 2020 postseason on a high note...onward!
