Chargers repel Trojan invasion to earn district win

Safe to say after their home game as favorites, not only did the Heritage Hall Chargers protect their turf but they also demolished the Douglass Trojans.

On the game's opening kickoff, senior standout Jordyn Harris received the ball and ran it back to the Trojans' 45 yard line.

On the first play of the game, star quarterback Andy Bass threw the ball right to the hands of Rashaud Smith, who made a somewhat comfortable catch and raced in for a quick touchdown. Cal Welker comfortably converted the point after attempt for a 7-0 Charger lead.

On their first drive, Douglass was absolutely pummeled by the Chargers defense. After just three plays – monstrous tackles from Bladen Vogel, Charlie Ghaniabadi, and a combined effort – the Charger defense then forced a safety on the Trojans.

The Trojans elected to punt the ball to Harris, who then darted and dashed past the entire Trojans team for yet another touchdown for the Chargers.

After another three and out and a Douglass punt, Heritage Hall took over near midfield. After a penalty brought back another big pass play from Bass to Smith, the star quarterback took matters into his own hands and showed off his incredible speed to earn the Chargers another big play touchdown.

Douglass continued to struggle on offense, unable to advance the ball on the Charger defense.

After another Trojan punt, it took the Chargers just one play from scrimmage to score again. This time it was with an unbelievable long ball from Bass to Harris for a touchdown. As usual, Welker tacked on the extra point for a 27-0 lead.

Once again, the Trojans were unable to move the ball at all and had to punt it away.

Starting on the 45 yard line Andy Bass handed the ball off to tailback Bladen Vogel, who picked up a big gain before being tackled at the 20 yard line. On the second play of the drive, Barrett Travis ran straight up the middle and into the end zone for a 34-0 lead near the end of the first quarter.

The Trojans somehow managed to get a first down on a miraculous throw by the quarterback. Douglass went right back to the air, completing a pass to a receiver who broke a tackle before being stopped at the 40 yard line – another 1st down.

After incomplete passes sandwiched around a Welker sack, the Trojans punted the ball once again as time expired in the first quarter.

After back-to-back runs by Travis earned the Chargers a first down, Bass connected with Carter Knowles on a play-action pass and the junior tight end scored another Charger touchdown.

Beau Butler launched a fantastic kickoff which sailed through the hands of a Trojan receiver who scooped up the ball before being met by a bunch of Charger defenders at the four yard line.

After being forced back to their one yard line, the Trojans ultimately had to punt again. The ball rolled out to the 29-yard line for some of the best field position the Chargers had to start a drive on the night.

On the next play, Bass faked a handoff and zoomed past the Trojans into the end zone for another touchdown and a 48-0 lead in the second quarter.

Douglass finally found a way to move the ball, completing a pass of 15 yards. On the next play, a pass interference call against the Chargers advanced the Trojans to the Charger 30-yard line. A short pass completion to a receiver who broke a tackle moved them to the doorstep of the red zone.

The drive was halted on an incomplete pass, a tackle-for-loss by Hillman Browne, and two more incompletions. The Trojans turned the ball over on downs.

With backup quarterback Walker Nelson entering the game, Heritage Hall turned to the ground game to churn some clock. Graham Murphy made a fantastic 15 yard run. Then, Nash Eiser picked up another first down on back-to-back carries. Nelson kept the ball for another big ground gain, and then pitched it to Walker Wedel who carried it to the right side of the field before zooming into the end zone for a Heritage Hall touchdown. The Hall held a commanding 57-0 first half lead.

With Douglass' starters and Heritage Hall's reserves battling to a stalemate through the third quarter, the Chargers struck again on the final play of the period.

An early and errant snap on the Trojans punt forced them to throw an awful pass that was beautifully intercepted by Porter England who raced along the sideline for a pick-six and the final score of the game for The Hall.

The teams played it even most of the fourth quarter and at the end of the game, the Chargers had scored 63 points and Douglass none.

Bass led the passing attack, as usual, completing all 4 of his pass attempts for 150 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also rushed for 79 yards and two scores on just two carries. Harris, Smith, and Knowles each caught a touchdown pass from Bass.

Wedel showed promise as a backup tailback, carrying the ball 4 times for 33 yards and a touchdown. Eiser got the bulk of the rushing attempts with 8 for 20 yards.

Defensively, the tackles were very spread out in such a great team effort with lots of younger players seeing action. Vogel led the way with 5 takedowns, including 2 for losses. The Chargers employed a sack attack, with Harris recording 2, and Travis, Welker, Freeman, and Charlie Ghaniabadi also dropping the Trojan quarterback.

This game was just a brutal beatdown for the Trojans as the Chargers picked up another easy district win. After Heritage Hall's super starters pushed them ahead by miles in the first two quarters, they were able to let some younger players get in the game for some valuable experience. Finishing out the game was then left to the rising Charger talent, who did so with ease. Head coach Brett Bogert '05 will lead the Chargers to Dickson to play the Comets in another Thursday night district showdown.
