Travis explodes to lead Hall to win over Kingfisher

In another rivalry renewal game, the Chargers dropped a "Barrett Bug Bomb" to dispose of the pesky Yellowjackets from Kingfisher.

Bruising running back Barrett Travis took a direct snap in the wildcat formation and raced to a score just three minutes into the game to give The Hall an early lead.

Swatted by the early score, an agitated Yellowjacket offense stung the Chargers with an answer score on a short tight end pass after a six minute drive. As the second quarter opened, the visitors sent a field goal flying through the uprights from 36 yards away to take a 10-7 lead.

The Chargers offensive line repelled the Jacket defense and Travis went to work on the ground, as he punched in two more touchdowns before the half to give the home squad a 20-10 lead.

A few minutes into the second half, the opportunistic Heritage Hall defense squashed the Kingfisher advance with a 67 yard scoop and score fumble return by Porter England after Travis punched the ball loose on a tackle.

On the next play from scrimmage, the Yellowjackets took advantage of busted coverage to connect on a wide open 75-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett Birdwell to Payton Burnham. Kingfisher had cut the lead to 26-16 after missing the two-point pass attempt.

Looking to reassert their dominance, the Chargers tossed the ball to Travis again. The bruising back didn't disappoint, as he broke free down the sideline for a 36-yard rushing score and a 33-16 advantage.

The scrappy Jackets would've cave though, as they answered with a deep pass from Birdwell to Blair, who out-jumped England to haul in a 31-yard touchdown strike and trim the lead back to 10 points.

In the fourth quarter, head coach Brett Bogert continued to put the ball in Travis' hands as he racked up yardage and burned clock time. Keying on Travis opened up the Kingfisher defense to other forms of attack, though. The Chargers were able to score on a short touchdown run by Conner Quintero – and then the junior quarterback swatted away the Yellowjackets' shot at a win, connecting on a 64 yard touchdown pass to Terrence Johnson.

The dual quarterback system was effective when it needed to be against Kingfisher. The starter, Teagan Lawson, connected on 8 of 15 attempts for 62 yards. Quintero was 6 of 9 for 107 yards through the air. They spread the ball evenly to their receiving targets. Travis was the true workhorse, however, as the tailback amassed 203 yards on 33 carries, four of those for touchdowns.

On defense, the Chargers were led by Travis (3 tackles, 2 sacks), David Griffin (3 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss), Kline Reuter (4 tackles), and Graham Murphy (4 tackles, sack).

The 46-23 win by Heritage Hall was the seventh straight over Kingfisher. Up next for The Hall is road trip to undefeated Plainview for pole position in the District title race. The Indians are coming off a one-point win over Pauls Valley, looking to avenge last year's blowout home loss to the Chargers. Heritage Hall holds a 7-1 series advantage and has won the last six meetings against Plainview.
