Chargers pounce on Wolves, 36-7

Anytime Heritage Hall and Davis share a field, intensity levels are at an all-time high. These two rivals have faced each other plenty of times over the years, resulting in repeated hard-nosed, down-to-the-wire football games. Despite being in the midst of a rebuilding phase, and regardless of talent level, the Wolves put eleven men on the field who fight hard on every play.

Heritage Hall started their first quarter off with electric offense and stifling defense. The Hall was able to get the ball into its two most dynamic players hands, Billy Ross Jr. and Connor Carey. As the Chargers moved down the field with ease, Carey dashed through a hole, broke an arm tackle in the secondary, and found paydirt from 15-yards out to give Heritage Hall a 7-0 lead.

No more scoring took place in the opening quarter, but it didn't take long for Billy Ross Jr. to find the endzone in the second. New starting quarterback Robert Mbroh connected with Ross in the flat, and the sprinter darted to a 25-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 13-0. Just when the crowd expected a routine extra point from kicker Parker Kays, holder Colby Lewis took the snap, faked the hold and ran in for a two point conversion. At the half, the Charger defense was the storyline, as it carried a shutout into the halftime locker room.

The second half was completely dominated by Heritage Hall; the Chargers were unstoppable in every phase of the game. It only took the Chargers three minutes to strike a big play once again, this time courtesy of receiver Phillip Smitherman. Mbroh launched a 50-yard bomb past incoming defenders to guide Smitherman toward the end zone and give the home team a 22-0 lead.

While the Charger defense continued dominating, the offense kept producing points. In the fourth quarter, Billy Ross Jr. delivered one last left hook to the Davis defense taking a 65-yard handoff to the house.

Later in the quarter, backup quarterback Jackson Jobe found reciever Joe Washington for a 6-yard score to up the lead even more.

Davis ultimately avoided the shutout, scoring a 46-yard touchdown run late in the game against the Charger reserves, but this did not take away from how dominant the Charger defense was Friday night.

Mbroh had a very efficient night for the Chargers, finishing 6/9 to go along with 115-yard and two touchdowns. Ross and Carey both had solid rushing performances and each found the endzone once. Smitherman only finished with one catch, but it was the 61-yard house call.

Defensively, Hardy Bowers led the team with 14 stops. Also in double-digit tackles for The Hall were Smitherman (13), Jaden McDaniel (12), Carey (12), and Conner Keith (10). McDaniel and Carey each had a quarterback sack.

The Chargers (2-1) host an unfamiliar foe next week in the Mount Saint Mary Rockets (1-2). It should be an action packed game Friday night, as these two teams have not met on the gridiron for decades.

Go Chargers!
