Chargers dominate Week 1 showdown with Falcons

After a hard fought game and a tough opening loss last year, the Chargers were fired up and ready for redemption against the 2A #2 Millwood Falcons. In addition to scoring a revenge victory, the Hall was looking to start the new season off strong. Leading up to this anticipated game both teams put in lots of preparation.

During the 2018 season and 2019 off-season, the Chargers focused on becoming stronger and tougher in order to play at the best of their abilities.
After coming off of an almost perfect season last year and losing six key seniors, the Chargers knew they had to step up in order to stay competitive at the level of play they were used to.

The Hall took almost no time to get a score on the board as junior Payton Earnest scored on a 14 yard pass from Jackson Jobe, to build early momentum. The Chargers' scoring continued throughout the first quarter. Robert Mbroh ran it from the 1-yard line on a designed quarterback run to put the Chargers up 14-0. Shortly thereafter Jobe threw a 5 yard strike to Jagger Ables to tack on another Hall touchdown.

Still in the second quarter, Millwood tried to stop Jayden Williams on a 36 yard run, but the junior running back powered through multiple Falcons to put the Chargers up 27-0.

The Charger defense was equally impressive. Heading into the halftime locker room, Millwood had more turnovers than first downs.

The Hall continued to dominate both defensively and offensively in the second half. Toward the end of the third quarter, junior Colby Lewis busted loose on a 23 yard touchdown run.

Philip Smitherman led the Hall in receiving yards with 44 on 3 receptions. With a comfortable 27-0 lead late in the third quarter, Head Coach Brett Bogert gave lots of playing time to young and less experienced players.

Much as Heritage did in 2018, Millwood struggled with several key injuries that occurred during the game and couldn't ever gain enough momentum to get anything rolling. The Chargers secured a stellar week one victory, 34-0.

The Hall remains at home this Friday to take on the 4A #5 Clinton Red Tornadoes at 7pm. The Chargers are looking to go 2-0 and continue on their road to State. Clinton comes off an impressive 49-14 win over Woodward. The last two meetings between the teams took place at the Tornado Bowl, where the Hall scored back-to-back come-from-behind wins.

The Chargers are working hard this week to improve in all aspects of play and continue their chase for another gold ball. Onward, Chargers!
